We’re thrilled to have kicked off our three-part webinar series on Antibody Identification (ABID). In Session 1: Tools of the Trade, we explored the foundational techniques and strategies used in antibody investigations.
This session was led by Helen Thom, Biomedical Scientist and RCI Development Lead at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). Helen guided us through the essential tools used in red cell serology with clarity, practical insight, and a touch of humour (yes, even SpongeBob made an appearance!).
This introductory session focused on:
- The use of panel cells in antibody investigations
- IAT (Indirect Antiglobulin Test) and enzyme techniques
- Grading of reactions and interpretation
- Applying inclusion and exclusion logic
- Understanding the Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT) and elutions
- The difference between phenotyping and genotyping
The webinar was purposely designed to be accessible to learners of all levels; whether you’re new to ABID, preparing for specialist exams, or simply need a refresher.

Part 2 of the webinar series will build on the foundations covered here and delve deeper into complex antibody identification and case-based approaches. Details will be released shortly.
Unfortunately, a number of participants experienced difficulties accessing the Teams meeting due to system restrictions. I sincerely apologise for that. I’ve identified the issue and will ensure the next sessions run more smoothly.
