Accessibility statement
This statement covers the Only Cells online courses at onlycells.co.uk/courses, including Oh blast! Morphology and Fix, Stain, Focus, their workbooks, trainer answer books and certificates. We want everyone who works in or is training for the laboratory to be able to use them.
What you can expect
- Every lesson activity can be done with a keyboard alone, as well as with a mouse or touch screen. This includes ordering steps, sorting, matching, flip cards, the film explorer, the stain pH slider, the "where is blood made" graph, the family tree, the practice differential count, and the microscope activities (the microscope explorer, Köhler set-up and find the dirt), whose sliders and buttons each have a label and whose view is described in words as you change it.
- Focus is always visible and moves in a logical order. A "Skip to main content" link is the first thing on every page.
- Every drawing has a text description of what to notice, written so that it does not give the answer away in identification activities.
- Results and feedback are announced to screen readers, and right and wrong answers are shown with a ✓ or ✗ and words, not by colour alone.
- Text and controls meet the WCAG 2.2 contrast levels in light and dark mode.
- Pages work at 200% zoom and reflow at 320 pixels wide without sideways scrolling. Wide tables scroll inside their own box.
- Animations stop when your device is set to reduce motion.
- There are no time limits. Assessments can be paused and finished later, answers can be changed before you submit, and you can retake them as often as you like.
- The workbook and trainer answer book are tagged PDFs with headings, a reading order and text alternatives for pictures. The certificate PDF is tagged and carries its full wording as a text alternative, and the certificate page shows the same wording as text.
How accessible the courses are
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 at level AA. We believe the course pages meet that standard, apart from the limitations listed below.
Known limitations
- Recognising cells and staining faults is a visual skill. The descriptions let you follow and take part in every activity, but learning to recognise cells and stain quality on a real blood film, and setting up a real microscope, depend on seeing them.
- Real photographs from the Only Cells Photo Library now replace some drawings in Oh blast! Part 1, and more will follow. Each one has a description of what to notice. In the "Real film" activities every circled cell is a numbered button, so you can choose cells with a keyboard or screen reader and hear what each one is, but finding cells by their look depends on seeing the photograph. "Bigger view" doubles the size of the photograph.
- The site header, menu and cookie banner are shared with the rest of onlycells.co.uk and are covered by the website's own checks.
- Screen reader testing has so far been done with automated tools and the browser's accessibility tree. We still plan to test with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack, and with disabled learners.
Feedback and contact
If something in a course doesn't work for you, or you need a workbook in a different format (such as large print or a Word document), email anas@onlycells.co.uk. Tell us the page and what happened. We will reply within 5 working days.
If you are not happy with our response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
How we tested
The courses were last tested on 15 October 2026 (Oh blast! Part 1, after real photographs were added) and 11 October 2026 (the other courses) by Only Cells. We checked every course page in light and dark mode with the axe-core tool against the WCAG 2.2 A and AA rules. We also checked colour contrast, completed the whole of Oh blast! Part 1 and Fix, Stain, Focus using only the keyboard, checked reflow at 320 pixels and zoom at 200%, and spot-checked the accessibility tree that screen readers use.
This statement was prepared on 11 October 2026 and last reviewed on 15 October 2026.
